It is one of the most important traditional Korean holidays. The meaty dumplings, tender oxtail and chewy rice make this festive meal. Tangerines and oranges are passed out freely during Chinese New Year as the words for tangerine and orange sound like "luck" and "wealth," respectively pomelos are found everywhere as the Chinese word for them sounds like the verb "to have." In addition, certain dishes are served throughout the two-week celebration based on their physical appearance: a whole chicken eaten during the Chinese New Year season symbolizes family togetherness, and uncut noodles represent a long life. Perhaps the most important holiday in Korea, Seollal is a time when family members come together to share their blessings and perform ancestral rites such as charye, a traditional ceremony in which various foods such as tteokguk are prepared as an offering to the family’s ancestors. Seollal or Korean Lunar New Year is the festive day celebrating the first day in the Lunar Calendar. It is a Korean tradition to serve this deeply flavorful soup for the Lunar New Year.

Foods that are considered lucky or offer good fortune are part of the menu, as are ingredients whose names in Chinese sound similar to other positive words. Eating a bowl of rice cake soup on the Lunar New Year symbolizes good health, a long life, and becoming another year older. Given the importance of food in Chinese culture, it is not surprising that certain dishes play a major role in Chinese New Year celebrations.
